The transformer is fully protected against short circuits by including a PTC resistor in its design. The PTC resistor is connected in series with one of the transformer windings. The PTC resistor is thermally coupled to the transformer or to a circuit element by a mechanical, electrical or electromechanical coupler. Alternatively, the PTC resistor may be incorporated inside the transformer housing and thermally coupled to it.
