The absorption type IC engine exhaust silencer is designed to facilitate assembly, and to minimise atmospheric pollution resulting from this process due to dispersion of sound absorbing material, such as glass fibre. To this end the absorbent sleeve is made up of several preformed, longitudinally jointed, pads secured around the perforated inner tube by ring clips. Alternatively it is applied as a mat, held in place by wound paper strip and covered by a layer of woven material which in turn is clipped. The bonding or wrapping material is burnt away in use.
