Machine for braking, in which the mechanical energy of rotation supplied to a chuck is dissipated in heat in a thin film of viscous liquid imprisoned between the chuck and a thin stationary steel sheet partly surrounding this chuck by the work of viscous forces in the liquid subjected to shear. The liquid flow is controlled by the shape of the entrance and other arrangements so as to remain permanent and so that the film thickness remains constant whatever the rotation speed of the chuck. The braking force is proportional to the speed of rotation. <IMAGE>
