Prepn. of modified acrylamide! polymers - where high pH gives faster reaction rate

In a process for the prepn. of a acrylamide polymer (A) contg. hydroxamic gps. by reacting aq. soln. of an acrylamide polymer (B) with a hydroxylamine salt (C) at a mole ratio of (C) to amide gps. in (B) of 0.1-2.0 an improvement comprises, conducting the reaction at pH = 8.0 or above at a temp. of 20-100 deg.C. The reaction remp. is 40-80 deg.C for 1-4 hrs. The pH is above 9.0 pref. above 11.0. (B) = acrylamide or polyacrylamide.
