The present invention is directed to a photocomposing machine and method in which characters of several different type styles are arranged in concentric rows on a continuously spinning character matrix disc. The disc is mounted on a carriage which is movable relative to a stationary photographic film sheet, and a carriage supporting several projection lenses is releasably secured to the disc carriage. A flash lamp also is secured to the disc carriage in a position to flash light through the disc, through one of the lenses, and onto a sheet of photographic film which is located very near the lenses. Characters are composed in lines on the film by first locking the lens and disc carriages together, and moving the combination of those elements and the flash lamp, as a unit, across the film while selectively flashing the lamp to project character images onto the film. Each of the lenses magnifies the image it receives by a different factor and thus produces characters of a different size on the film. The lenses are arranged in a linear array in a holder releasably secured to the lens carriage. The lenses are relatively small and inexpensive and the optical system is simple and compact because the focal lengths and apertures of the lenses are small. Furthermore, all of the character images are transmitted primarily through the lenses in the direction of the axis so as to maintain high quality images and type composition. The lenses and mounting means are relatively lightweight and thus can be moved relatively easily in order to maintain the operating speed of the machine at a high level.
|
