1448800 Bipolar electrolysis electrode SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 12 Aug 1974 [13 Aug 1973] 35375/74 Heading C7B The electrode, useful in melt-electrolysis of fluoride or oxide melts in Al production, comprises a conductive ceramic oxide anode surface, a conductive cathodic surface of a different material and an optional intermediate layer. The ceramic oxide may be compressed and sintered being based on oxides of Sn, Fe, Cr, Co, Ni or Zn with the optional addition of 0À01-20 wt per cent of one or more oxides of Fe, Sb, Cu, Mn, Nb, Zn, Cr, Co, W, Cd, Zr, Ta, In, Ni, Ca, Ba or Bi. Alternatively this oxide may be applied as a coating to the intermediate layer which may be of Ag, Ni, Cu, Co, Mo or a conductive carbide, boride, nitride or silicide. The cathodic material, which may also optionally be a coating, may be graphite or a boride carbide, nitride or silicide of C, Si, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta or W. The components of the cell may be held in a non-conducting frame of e.g. BN, Si 3 N 4 , Al 2 O 3 or MgO, or in recesses in the cell wall via the support of electrolyte solidified by passage of a cooling medium through the cell wall adjacent the recesses. In use in a cell the anode, cathode and bipolar electrodes are parallel and may be inclined to the vertical. Electrolyte preferably covers the working anodic bipolar surface. The cell anode and cathode materials may correspond with those of the bipolar surfaces.
|
