For the causticisation of fabrics consisting completely or partially of natural or regenerated cellulose fibres with caustic alkali solutions in the presence of wetting agents, aqueous solutions which contain 10-30 parts by weight of sulphates of the formula R-O-SO3M, 6-20 parts by weight of hexylene glycol and 6-15 parts by weight of isononyl alcohol are used as wetting agents. R denotes a (C3-C10) aliphatic, (C5-C10) cycloaliphatic or a (C7-C10) aralkyl radical. M is hydrogen or an alkali metal cation. Significantly shorter wetting times are achieved in this process.
