When the mains voltage is present a capacitor is charged through a rectifier. The emergency lighting circuit comprises a discharge lamp, esp. a fluorescent lamp; there is a ballast and a switch closing in case of mains failure. There is a circuit containing the capacitor and an inverter for the lamp supply. A second switch (26) in series with the ballast (25) switches the circuit to continuous or stand-by operation. The system may be entirely automatic in operation.
