The ship's rudder comprises a main blade attached to the rudder shaft and a vertically pivoted fin on the trailing edge of the main blade. A hydraulic system moves the fin relative to the main blade. The hydraulic connection between the hull(10) and the rudder (20) consists of a flexible pipe (110) wound round the rudder shaft (21) and enclosed in a cylindrical housing (120, 116). Water level inside the housing is kept low by compressed air from a nozzle (115a) to prevent icing. The hydraulic pipe (110) may be enclosed in a flexible compressed air tube for protection. The air pressure is monitored to detect damage.
|
