A lift is specified which is fastened with a cage (1) to a transportable section of rail (14). A further fixed rail (23) is arranged on the outer wall of the building in such a way that the bottom end is at a considerable distance from the ground. The transportable rail (14) with the cage is moved by a transport means up to the building and is connected to the rail firmly attached to the building. By means of self-contained drive elements (10, 11, 12), the cage (1) can then travel on the two rails connected to one another. Measuring instruments or other necessary devices for maintaining the outer wall of the building or technical equipment arranged on the building can then be firmly installed in the cage (1) or be carried along by it. <IMAGE>
