The cylinder head (3) of the engine contains a single valve (7). An opening (2) in the cylinder head contains a rotor (1) which has two passages (4, 5) through it. According to the position of the rotor the passages in it can put the passage (6) round the valve in communication with either the suction pipe (8) or the exhaust pipe (9) or the part of the rotor between the passages can close the valve passage. The rotor has a cam surface (10) which drive the pushrod (11) of the valve gear. It has a projecting shaft (1a) by means of which it is driven from the crankshaft.
