The catalytic hydrodealkylation of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons is carried out at 400-650 degrees C (pref. 500-620 degrees C) and 1-40 (pref. 1-30, esp. 1-20) kg/cm2 with an LHSV of 1-10 (pref. 2-8) and an H2/product molar ratio of 1-10 (pref. 3-8) in the presence of catalyst A or B, where catalyst A comprises (a) a support, (b) 0.05-20 (pref. 1-17) wt% Co and/or 0.05-5 (pref. 0.1-1) wt% Ru, Os, Pd, Rh, Ir and/or Pt, and (c) 0.05-5 (pref. 0.1-2) wt% of Zn, Cd, Ga, In, Tl, Mn, Cu, Ag, Au, Y, Ti, Nb and/or Ta, and catalyst B comprises (a) a support, (b) 0.05-20 (pref. 0.1-10) wt% Cr, Mo, W, Re and/or Mn, and (c) 0.05-20 (pref. 0.1-5) wt% of one or more metals, different from (a), selected from Cr, Mo, W, Re, Mn Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, Ga, In, Tl, Ge, Sn and Pb. These catalysts allow the use of process conditions which are much less severe than those used in conventional process, thus reducing the formation of coke precursors (higher aromatics). |
