The process and the apparatus are intended for controlling the etch depth of the wells of printing cylinders, it being possible to influence the total range of the gradation curve and separately to influence in particular the middletone region and the shadow dots by carrying out the continuous etch depth measurements simultaneously in the shadow dots and in the middletone region of the gradation curve, and, in addition to the change in the speed of rotation of the printing cylinder, the concentration and/or the temperature of the etching bath being changed.
