1536926 Packages JOHNSON & JOHNSON 14 July 1976 [29 Sept 1975] 29332/76 Headings B8C and B8K A package comprises a bottom sheet 12 having folded side edges forming flanges 20, 22, and a top sheet 14 coated on its underneath surface with a thermoplastic adhesive so that the sheet can be heat-sealed to the flanges forming sideseals 24, 26 and to the flanges and to the bottom sheet between the flanges to form end seals 28, 30, there being a further adhesive 38, 40-42 incompatible with the thermoplastic adhesive forming a seal between the flanges and the underlying surface of the bottom sheet in the region of the end seals, this further adhesive not extending on the bottom sheet between the flanges, and the thermoplastic adhesive filling or "calking" any channels along the flanges beween the top and bottom sheet. The thermoplastic adhesive may be polyethylene or polypropylene, and the further adhesive a polyvinyl acetate emulsion. The emulsion may be printed on to the ends of the bottom sheet on the underneath of the flange and on part only of the underlying surface of the sheet. The end seal 30 and the side seals may be formed first to form a bag which is then sealed. The side seals may terminate short of the adhesive areas 38, 40, or the further adhesive may be omitted from the flange along the line of the side seals with the conditions of the side sealing being such as to prevent the flange being bonded to the adhesive on the underlying surface to facilitate filling. The sheets may be made of paper to permit sterilization.
