The sealing cap is for a bottle having an annular bead on the neck near the mouth, and is particularly for champagne bottles. It comprises a resilient seal held compressed by the cap and a dish-shaped holding clip with lateral gaps for the bead attached to the cap edge. In the closed position the clip lugs engage below the bead, and the remainder bears against the cap. The seal (9) slides in opposition to its supporting spring (7) axially from near the gap (14) further inside the cap (4) in the closed position. The sides of the gaps opposite to the lugs (12) form portions protruding axially (14) below the lower cap edge (6). Their distance from the upper bead edge (2) is at the most equal to the amount of movement of the seal during the closing operation.
