A process and a clear varnish are described for repairing defects in the surface paint or varnish of various types, in particular for repairing damaged parts of motor vehicles and other vehicles. The invention consists in spraying, on the boundary between the new zones of application of varnish and the old-varnish zones, a band of obliterating liquid consisting of a clear varnish composed of a mixture of 65 to 80% by weight of poly(methyl methacrylate) and 35 to 20% by weight of cellulose acetobutyrate, this mixture being dissolved in an organic solvent or mixture of solvents, in such a quantity that the obliterating liquid has the viscosity required for application by spraying.
