PURPOSE:To attain the stable molecular orientation state of distinct bright and dark contrasts without electric fields and to realize the distinct threshold characteristic as well as to allow easy dynamic driving by obtaining the three stable states of the molecular orientation at the time of electric field impression and non-electric field impression by a ferroelectric liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:This device is constituted by forming transparent electrodes 1a, 2a on the inner side of transparent substrates 1c, 2c, disposing oriented films 1b, 2b thereon, providing electrode substrates 1, 2 apart a prescribed spacing thereon, holding the ferroelectric liquid crystal 6 in place between the substrates, connecting the substrates 1, 2 to an external power source 3, and impressing the voltage for forming electric fields thereto. The molecular orientation of this ferroelectric liquid crystal 6 has the 1st stable state at the time of the non-electric field impression and the molecular orientation has the 2nd stable state different from the 1st stable state with respect to one electric field direction and has further the 3rd stable state of the molecular orientation different from the 1st and 2nd stable states with respect to the electric field direction at the time of the voltage impression. The distinct bright and dark contrasts are obtd., the distinct threshold is produced and the easy dynamic driving is executed by obtaining the above-mentioned three stable states of the molecular orientation. |
