PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material which can form a film excellent in acid resistance, long-term weather resistance, drying, finish, hardness, scratch resistance even if baked at a low temperature as well as can reduce volatile components when baked. SOLUTION: A resin for coating material is composed by copolymerization of a monomer mixture comprising (a) 10-50 wt.% of a polymerizable unsaturated monomer which has a 10-20C alicyclic hydrocarbon group with a crosslink; (b) 15-50 wt.% of styrene; (c) 21-45 wt.% of a polymerizable unsaturated monomer containing a hydroxyl group; (d) 0.1-10 wt.% of at least one monomer selected from a polymerizable unsaturated monomer with ultraviolet stability and a polymerizable monomer with ultraviolet absorption; and (e) 0-53.9 wt.% of other polymerizable unsaturated monomers which can copolymerize, the resin for coating material has weight-average molecular weight within the range of 1,500-8,000 and has a hydroxyl value within the range of 100-180 mgKOH/g, and a coating composition contains (A) the present resin for coating material and (B) a curing agent.
