The gear unit for the height adjustment system for e.g. a work table includes a gear wheel (9) fixed to one leg section. This meshes with a toothed rack (8) attached to the other leg section. A second gear wheel (11) is mounted coaxially with the first gear wheel (9) to which it is fixed secure against rotation. This second gear hweel has teeth which mesh with the worm (10). The two worms of the two table legs are mounted on a common shaft which extends longitudinally through the transverse web (6) which connects the two lower leg sections together. The gear wheel (11) associated with the worm is preferably designed as a stamped section connected to a hub which forms the coupling with the first gear wheel (9).
