1534162 Cryogenic probes SPEMBLY Ltd and J W LLOYD 22 June 1977 [21 July 1976] 30351/76 Heading A5R A cryogenic probe having a tip of thermally conductive material which is cooled by a cooling fluid, is provided with an electrode for applying an electrical stimulus to the tissue being treated. In Fig. 2 the tip 23 is a stainless steel insert which also forms the electrode, said insert being disposed at the front end of a stainless steel tube 21 which is connected to a nerve stimulator unit (14), Fig. I (not shown); the probe is used in conjunction with an auxiliary electrode (16). The tube 21 has a PTFE coating 22 and contains a gas inlet tube for supplying a refrigerant gas such that the tip is cooled by the Joule-Thomson effect; a further tube 27 houses two electrical leads 28 leading to a thermocouple junction 29. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the tip has two spaced-apart electrodes and the auxiliary electrode (16) is dispensed with.
