Compounds having the formula R-X-CH=CH2-CH2O-Y (I) wherein R is alkyl or alkenyl containing one to 20 carbon atoms, X is S, SO or SO2 and Y is hydrogen, alkanoyl containing 2 to 20 carbon atoms or alkenoyl containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms, SO3M or PO3M2, wherein M is hydrogen, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, or an oxyalkylene group having 1-20 ethylene oxide units or propylene oxide units, are incorporated as a preservative or anti-microbial agent, in compositions that are subject to deterioration by the action of micro-organisms, excluding food and medicines.
