A new use is claimed for hydroxycinnamic acid esters of formula (I) (where R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R2 is 1- 8C alkyl phenyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl; n is 1, 2 or 3), as antiinflammatory agents in cosmetics. Partic. useful in sunscreen compsns. associated with convention UV screening agents. The cpds. themselves absorb at 300 nm and also act as sunscreen agents. A typical sunscreen oil contained 20 g of ethyl 2-hydroxy-cinnamate and 30 g of menthyl salicylate in a mixt. of 300 g of vegetable oil contg. lecithin, 400 g of olive oil, 100g of isopropyl myristate and 100 g of oil from the fox uropygial gland.
