A container for paint of other liquid or pasty substances has a flat bottom (3), cylindrical wall (2) and a collar (5) into which a lid is pressed to close the container. A length of wire, of stainless steel or plastics coated, is inserted in the container during manufacture. The wire is bent at three places. It has a vertical part (7) with its end on the bottom of the container. This extends the length of the wall and against it. A horizontal section (8) extends diametrically across the opening. An oblique section (9) joins horizontal section (10) diametrically across the bottom and at right angles to section (8). A brush or spatula can be wiped on section (8) so avoiding fouling of the inner surface of the collar.
