The track guided movable platform can precisely locate e.g. a laboratory instrument within a two or three dimensional system. The track or rail (1) is of a symmetrical cruciform cross-section and passes through a matching opening (7) in a block (6) supporting the platform. The block is displaced either manually or by motor by means of a rack and pinion mechanism. The cruciform rail (1) has good structural properties and provides low tolerance guidage in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The legs of the cross (3, 5 and 2, 4) are aligned horizontally and vertically respectively, and a rack formation (16) is cut in the outer edge of the lower vertical leg (4). The pinion is housed in the block (6) to mesh with the rack (16) and may be manipulated by an external hand wheel (19). Alternatively, a drive motor may be used. Spring-loaded adjustable ball-bearings or slides may be incorporated in the block to reduce lateral play relative to the rail. |
