The drive shaft of the vehicle wheel is driven from an intermediate shaft which in turn may be driven by an electric motor, an engine or both at the same time. The transmission to the intermediate shaft is pref. by endless belts, and the engine may be used to drive the motor as a generator and recharge its batteries. The motor may include a reversing device to drive the vehicle in forward and reverse directions. The vehicle wheel may include a speed reducer.
