The telescopic damper is fitted with a series of ring shaped valve ducts to allow a controlled flow of fluid past the piston. If the flow exceeds a set rate then the valves shut and secure the damper setting. The critical flow rate causes the ring shaped ducts to be blocked by spring loaded reaction plates. The damper is a higher performance type which is set on articulated couplings to stabilise the trailer setting when the vehicle starts to jacknife.
