Prodn of liq. hydrocarbons from coal is carried out by (a) gasifying the coal at 1050-2000 degrees C; (b) converting the resulting mixt. into aromatic hydrocarbons using a zeolite catalyst with an SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio of >=12 and a constraint index of 1-12; (c) fractionating the product form (b) to separate an isobutane-contg. gaseous fraction and a gasline-range liq. fraction; (d) alkylating the isobutane-contg. fraction to give a gasoline-range product; and (e) blending the gasoline-range products from steps (c) and (d). The process gives high-octane gasoline (e.g. RON >90) and LPG as products.
