Single or multi-geared thread spindle connects the two legs of the compasses and equipped with an adjustment screw. The thread spindle has a rotatable bearing inthe hinge sleeves which have a swivel location in the compasses legs. Inat least one of the compasses legs the hinge sleeves have a rotatable bearing of which at least one is fitted with rollers or ball bearings (4) permitting a screwing through of the thread spindle. In the case of a quick adjustment the rollers or ball bearings roll off on to the thread spindle which does not rotate with them.
