The cylinders of a four stroke diesel engine are divided into two groups (21-23, 24-26). At low loads the air from the turbocharger compressor (14) passes through one group (25-26) in which it is compressed and is delivered from this to the second group (21-23) in which combustion takes place. The air enters the first group through the inlet manifold (21) and leaves through the exhaust manifold (19). At full load, air from the turbocharger compressor (14) enters all cylinders and combustion takes place in all of them. The change in flow from part to full load is obtained by three way valves (27, 28) in the inlet and exhaust pipes. The system enables a low compression ratio engine to work at part load without complicated valve timing controls.
