<p>The invention relates to stripping part of the covering from an article comprising a substrate and a covering. In one aspect the invention provides apparatus comprising force-exerting means and cooperating stripping means which are adapted to exert a compressive force on a section of said article, said stripping means having a shape and hardness such that, when a sufficient compressive force is exerted, the stripping means causes substantial deformation of the covering but, if it contacts the substrate, itself undergoes plastic or elastic deformation without causing substantial deformation of the substrate; preferably the force-exerting means is a second stripping means. In another aspect the invention provides a process in which such apparatus is used to strip part of the covering from an article comprising a substrate and a covering; the covering is deformed (but the substrate is not) by exerting a compressive force on the article, and the covering is then severed and stripped by moving the article and the apparatus relative to each other, while maintaining the compressive force.</p> |
