The counterflow cooling tower is used for cooling or heating for example water. Cooling is ensured by heat and mass transfer, for example, to air. The water reaches a collector at cooling tower bottom. Additional openings (15) are provided above the usual air inlet openings (19). Water flows as cascade over these shutters (12) to the collection pond (2). The latter is smaller than the filling element stack.
