A machine component (1) which is to be given a linear motion contains two rollers (3) which grip a flexible hose (2) between them. A gaseous or liquid fluid (4) is forced through the hose from a remote source. The rollers squeeze the hose sufficiently to stop the flow of fluid. The stagnation pressure of the fluid on the rollers produces a force which pushes them along the hose. When the direction of flow of the fluid is reversed the movement of the component (1) is reversed. This makes it possible to control a movement in a hazardous or inaccessible enclosure from outside that enclosure.
