Treatment of cereals to increase the grain yield is effected by: (a) applying giberallin to the immature, growing cereal the amt. and time of application such that the cereal produces tillers which carry ripe ears which can produce ripe grain at the same time as the ears on the primary shoots;(b) letting the cereal develop to maturity; and (c) collecting the grain from the primary shoots and tillers. Many varieties of cereals at harvest have ripe ears on only the primary shoot and there are only weaks tillers or none. Typically, Maris Huntsman wheat sown on 30/10/75 was sprayed with gibberellin soln (5ppm; 0.5l/m2) on 8 consecutive days from 1/3/76. At harvest, the grain yield was 76% higher than in control plots.
