1530730 9α-Hydroxyandrosteredione preparation, and mutant microorganism used therein UPJOHN CO 22 Oct 1976 [24 Oct 1975] 43882/76 Heading C2U A fermentation beer containing 9α-hydroxyandrost-4-ene-3,17-dione is prepared by cultivating a mutant microorganism in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of one or more steroids having 2- 10 carbon atoms in the 17-alkyl side chain. The mutant is derived from a steroid-degrading microorganism selected from the genera Arthrobacter, Bacillus, Brevibacterium, Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium, Nocardia, Protaminobacter, Serratio and Streptomyces and is selected for its ability to form the desired product which may be isolated by conventional means. A preferred mutant, Mycobacterium fortuitum NRRL-B 8119 is novel.
