A lock esp. for nuclear reactors, comprises a tube with a door at each end. The doors are operated by hydraulic drives with an interlock, the hydraulic fluid being supplied through an electromagnetically operated main valve to either one door or the other. This main valve leads into two identical circuits each comprising >=1 electromagnetically operated 4-4 way valve for opening or closing the door. Esp. used for a large lock through a nuclear reactor main containment, intended for the passage of fuel element transport vessels of weights >100 tons. Arrangement is simpled, robust and extremely reliable. The entire unit comprising the main hydraulic valves can be constructed as a single works-tested assembly, which is then mounted outside the containment in an accessible position for inspection and repair.
