An annular tubular heat exchanger with prim. and second. fluids outside and inside the tubes, respectively, incorporates separate groups of vertical tubes, each group in a shell, constituting a series of adjacent modules which are distributed circumferentially in an outer cylindrical shell. Each module has an individual inlet and an individual outlet connected respectively to a feed and an outlet pipe for the second. fluid. The exchanger is partic. used as an intermediate heat exchanger in a fast neutron nuclear reactor in which the prim. fluid, liq. sodium, absorbs heat in the core and transmits it to the sec. fluid, liq. sodium in the exchanger. The modular construction reduces the transverse space and allows individual modules to be isolated e.g. for repair without complete shut down and without the need to interfere with neighbouring modules.
