Microporous acrylonitrile! MMA copolymers - useful as organic glasses, e.g. for light fittings

Prodn. of translucent or opaque white or coloured plastics materials, comprises copolymerising acrylonitrile and methylmethacrylate and forming a microfoam in the polymer. Pref. a 50-90: 50-10 wt.% mixt. of acrylonitrile and methylmethacrylate, opt. with up to 15% other monomers such as acrylic esters, styrene, vinyltoluene, etc., are copolymerised in the presence of an inert organic blowing agent, and the resulting polymer is opt. post treated to form a microfoam with a pore size of ca 1 mu. The polymers are esp. useful in the prodn. of cast sheets having excellent optical and mechanical properties. They are useful e.g. as organic glasses which are partic. useful as protective and safety glass, esp. for lighting fittings.
