The snare drum if fitted with a band of tension member to allow pre-loading to occur. The band which spans the bottom surface of the drum has a frame (14) with fixing elements at either end (23, 28). The tension elements (24) run the length of the unit and are attached to the fixing elements. The drum has tensioning wires from 0.16-0.95 cm in size and are typically 0.635 cm. There are also side faces (20) which retain the ends of the wires which are held down against end plates each having an acute angled upwardly extending lip forming an angle of about 2. 5 deg. with the side face.
