The mechanism is intended for filling and sealing bags (5), partic. for packing bulbs or tubers such as potatoes in hessian bags (5). It comprises a conveyor track (1) for trolleys (3) each having a hopper (2) and clamping means to releasably suspend a bag from a hopper at a suspension station (4) along the track where an empty bag is suspended below the hopper. There is a filling station (8) with a chute (9) feeding into the hopper, a transfer station (10) with means to stretch the upper end of the bag, a receiving element (14) gripping the bag below the stretching device and moving it to a sewing station (15) with sewing machine (16) to close the top of the filled bag.
