The rig of a small boat or sand yacht has its sail in two parts by a sliding clasp fastener (3). To reef, i.e. reduce the area of the sail (2), the fastener (3) is undone and the upper part of the sail wrapped (4) around the mast (1). The reefing facility obviates the need for a storm sail, and may be used on craft without a boom. A number of stages of reefing may be attained by dividing the sail into several panels joined by sliding clasp fasteners. An alternative form involves removal of a trapezoidal section from the central part of the sail.
|
