Glass melting tank for e.g. basalt - is prepd. from or lined with alumina-chromium oxide bricks

A tank for melting mineral materials, esp. basalts and diabase is lined with refractory Al2O3-Cr2O3 blocks. These blocks are isostatically pressed and sintered at >=1700 degrees C. Their compsn. is 92-98 wt.% Al2O3 and 8-2 wt.% Cr2O3. The porosity of the blocks is 2-5%. No fluxes or binders are required in the mfr. of the blocks. The high firing temp. causes the Cr2O3 to diffuse into the Al2O3 so that it is firmly bound and not released as chromate. The blocks show improved resistance to abrasion by the melt.
