A measuring device which is attached to test equipment performing tensile tests on a test rod. The device is capable of measuring small amounts of extensions as well as large amounts without requiring any adjustments or replacing any components. It produces a linear signal of high accuracy. The frame (2) incorporates a clamping system which itself consists of clamps to adjust the measuring device in the correct position on opposite sides of the test rod (1). There are two wheels (8, 10) at a fixed distance from the clamp. One wheel is coupled to a signal generator which will transmit a signal which is directly proportional to the angular displacement of the wheel. The wheel is coupled to the generator by a pulley which is linked to an adjustable core.
