The chains 1 carry magnet mounting shoes 5 pivoted to the chain, each shoe having a pair of pot magnets 6 attached to its underside. As a lidded tin passes under the snub wheels 2, the lid is attracted by the magnets and lifted off the tin. When the gripped tin encounters the turn-around point of the magnet wheels 3, the pivotal mounting of the shoes allows them to swivel to maintain the magnets in alignment with the lid face. The lids are stripped from the chains by conventional stripping belts. A lidding machine may be constructed in a similar manner.
