PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF (1-OXO-2-PHENYL, HALOPHENYL OR THIENYL-2-METHYL-6,7-DICHLORO-5-INDANYLOXY)ACETIC

(1-Oxo-2-phenyl, halophenyl or thienyl-2-methyl 6,7-dichloro-5-indanyloxy)-acetic acid is prepared by reacting a 2,3-dichloroanisole or 2 3-dichlorophenoxy-acetic acid or ester with a suitable .alpha.-haloacylhalide or .beta.-haloacylhalide under Friedel-Crafts conditions to form an intermediate acylation product which undergoes dehydrohalogenation in the side chain followed by ring closure to give an intermediate or the desired 2-substituted indanone. This latter compound is alkylated with a methylating or arylating agent to give the desired indanone. Several novel intermediates are also claimed.
