Expansion joints which are subjected to traffic loads are often designed with metal structures with elastomeric expansion strips. With relatively large widths, such expansion joints are subdivided into part-joints by metal supporting bars. In the case of the invention, grooves (15, 16) in which the expansion strips (20) are held are arranged on the gap-side delimiting surfaces (14) of the edge profile carriers (1). Since the edge profile carriers (1) delimit a trapezoidal intermediate space, the conflicting requirements: a) as narrow a gap as possible in the area of the carriageway between the metal parts, b) exchangeability of the elastic expansion strips (20), and c) the largest possible expansion area of the elastic strip or strips (20) can be overcome in an optimum manner. With large joint widths, supporting bars can be arranged to give a plurality of trapezoidal intermediate spaces with grooves (15, 16) for holding the expansion strips.
