PRODUCTION OF IMPREGNATED CARBON MATERIAL

PURPOSE:To obtain an impregnated carbon material having low porosity in high productivity by impregnating pitch in a carbon material having low density, infusibilizing exclusively the surface part of the carbon material and then the whole carbon material and carbonizing or graphitizing the material. CONSTITUTION:A carbon material such as coke is mixed with a binder such as pitch and the mixture is formed and then carbonized or graphitized to produce a low-density carbon material such as artificial carbon or artificial graphite. The low-density carbon material is impregnated with pitch (e.g. coal tar pitch) and exclusively the surface part of the carbon material is quickly heated above the softening point of the impregnated pitch to infusibilize the pitch and prevent the flow-out of the impregnated pitch. The exclusive infusibilization of the surface part is preferably carried out by blasting hot air against the surface part with a drier, etc. Thereafter, the carbon material is infusibilized as a whole and the material is carbonized or graphitized to obtain a carbon material having low porosity without repeating the impregnation of pitch.
