Rubber-modified polyphenylene ether (PPO) resins are made by first forming a solvent soln. of the PPO and a diene rubber, contg. 0.5-30 wt. % of the diene rubber. A non-solvent for the PPO and the rubber is then added to ppte. a finely divided homogeneous powder mixt. of the PPO and the rubber. Pref. the PPO resin used is poly-(2,6-dimethyl-1, 4-phenylene) ether with an average of >=100 repeating structural units in the chain. The rubber is pref. polybutadiene. The rubber-modified PPO resins have a lower softening point than unmodified PPO resins coupled with improved melt processing characteristics, esp. a lower melt viscosity. The enables prods. such as fibres and films to be made by normal melt processing techniques without using excessively high temps., which cause disclosuration, or special equipment. The modified materials are less brittle than unmodified PPO, and give moulding with increased impact strength.
|
