The fruit and vegetable washing unit comprises a container (11) filled with water into which the vegetables or the like are immersed following which air or the like, of specific gravity other than unity, is fed into the water through one or more nozzles (13) so that as the air and water mix and move about they produce cleaning action on the vegetables. The vegetables, fruit etc are pref placed in a mesh basket (20) for easy insertion and removal. The nozzle(s) (13) through which the air is blown in are pref. connected up to an air pump (16) or air source (15). This cleaning action whilst being very effective is suitable for solf fruit such as strawberries.
