A four family dwelling unit (1) has a combustion engine using a primary energy such as oil, coal or gas to produce electrical energy. The heat losses from the exhaust and water cooling systems are fed to suitable heat exchange unis (3, 4). Valves (5, 8) determine when the heat is to be used for space heating or for storage. The combustion engine generator (9) provides electrical energy for the household and contributes the surplus to a common supply network (10). The household supply network (10) has charging points (11) for the dwelling occupants' electrically propelled vehicles.
