Mineralocorticoid 3 beta,16 beta-di:hydroxy-5-androstenone prodn. - by fermentation of the di:acetate with Flavobacterium esteroaromaticum, Streptomyces halstedii or S. vinaceus

In the prodn. of 3 beta, 16 beta-dihydroxy-5-androsten-17-one (I), 3 beta, 16 beta-diacetoxy-5-androsten-17-one (II) is fermented with a culture of Flavobacterium esteroaromaticum, Streptomyces halstedii or Streptomyces vinaceus. (I) is a known cpd. with mineralocorticoid activity. Acidic or basic hydrolysis of (II) gives 3 beta, 17 beta-dihydroxy-5-androsten-16-one, and hydrolysis with Flavobacterium dehydrogenans gives 17 beta-hydroxy-androstane-3,16-dione. Fermentation with the microorganisms specified above unexpectedly gives (I) in high yields. In an example, (II) (2.0g) is incubated 14 hrs. with a culture of Flavobacterium esteroaromaticum ATCC 8091 and the resulting culture is worked up to give (I) in a yield of 1.15g.
